U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is pushing to ban ten common but dangerous food ingredients. These substances are hardly "food," yet they have long been present in our diets and involve huge corporate interests, including those in the pharmaceutical, food, and chemical industries. He faces enormous resistance but remains committed to reform .

1. Food coloring
These artificial colorings have no nutritional value but may be carcinogenic. The United States once banned any food ingredient that poses a carcinogenic risk to humans or animals through the " Delaney Clause," but the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996 allowed these chemicals to re-enter the food supply chain .
2. Junk Food Assistance ( SNAP Program )
RFK is pushing to reform the U.S. food stamp system, banning subsidies for purchasing junk food such as sodas containing high-fructose corn syrup. While this move has met with strong opposition, including from the American Heart Association, RFK points out that taxpayers actually pay for these foods three times: subsidizing the ingredients, subsidizing the purchase, and paying for medical expenses related to chronic diseases .
3. Titanium Dioxide
This additive is often used to make food look "pure," but it has been banned in France because it can cause DNA damage and enter the brain, and is considered a carcinogen .
4. Brominated vegetable oil ( BVO )
Although it's called vegetable oil, it's actually a flame retardant, commonly found in soft drinks. It's banned in Europe, Japan, and India, but still permitted in the United States .
5. Potassium Bromate
It is commonly used in bread making to make the dough fluffy, but it may be carcinogenic. It has been banned in 30 countries worldwide, but the United States has not yet followed suit .
6. High Fructose Corn Syrup ( HFCS )
This sweetener is closely linked to fatty liver, diabetes, and heart disease. It is one of 4,000 products derived from genetically modified corn and is subsidized by the government .
7. Seed Oils
For most people , 25% to 30% of their daily calorie intake comes from seed oils, such as canola oil, soybean oil, and corn oil. These oils can seep into cell membranes and brain tissue, making them difficult to eliminate and causing chronic inflammation and toxic reactions in the long term .
8. Ultra - processed foods
It is mainly composed of synthetic sugars, synthetic starches, and seed oils, all of which are subsidized by the government. RFK hopes to remove these foods from schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. Arizona is planning to completely eliminate ultra-processed foods from schools by 2026 .
9. Artificial sweeteners
Unlike sugar alcohols, artificial sweeteners are mostly made from petrochemicals, which can disrupt gut flora, are highly addictive, and may even be carcinogenic .
10. Generally Recognized As Safe ( GRAS ) Vulnerability
RFK is challenging the FDA 's GRAS ( Generally Recognized As Safe) policy, which allows companies to self-assess product safety without third-party review or notification to the FDA . This has led to many harmful substances, such as trans fats, being deemed "safe" and widely used .
The tug-of-war between education and truth
Opponents argue that "it's enough to educate the public," but in an environment of information bias and conflicting interests, educational content is often distorted. Furthermore, the massive advertising budgets invested by businesses to promote the message that "moderate consumption of junk food is harmless" make it difficult to implement genuine health guidelines .
RFK 's reform goals are not just to ban dangerous ingredients, but to fundamentally improve dietary guidelines in the United States and prevent ultra-processed foods from infiltrating the medical, educational, and military systems .
