"Safe" chemicals in food? Unveiling the truth behind GRAS certification.

食物中的「安全」化學物?揭開GRAS認證的真相

What is GRAS ? It turns out to be a loophole in corporate self-certification.

A recent, shocking discovery has revealed that the " GRAS " ( Generally Recognized As Safe) certification used by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) allows companies to independently declare certain chemicals as "safe." This means that 99% of the approximately 10,000 food additives on the market have not actually undergone comprehensive safety reviews .

This system has become a major loophole for companies to circumvent regulations, allowing many chemicals that are legal in the United States to be banned in Europe. Below are six common but potentially hazardous GRAS- certified chemicals .

Six chemicals that are "generally considered safe" but may be toxic

1. Nitrates

Commonly found in bacon and processed meats, sodium nitrate is used to maintain its bright red color and extend its shelf life. However, additives like sodium nitrate have been linked to cancer risk. It's worth noting that nitrates derived from natural celery juice belong to a different type .

2. BHA (Butyl Hydroxyanisole )

This is a preservative that, while extending the shelf life of food, is also a known endocrine disruptor that can affect the hormonal system and is linked to cancer risk .

3. BHT (Butylhydroxytoluene )

Similar to BHA , it is also a preservative widely found in many foods. It not only disrupts the endocrine system but may also damage the kidneys and liver, increasing the risk of cancer .

4. Potassium Bromide

Used as a dough improver, it is commonly found in bread and flour products. This substance is considered a carcinogen, can interfere with thyroid function, and inhibit iodine absorption. Consuming iodine from seaweed or seafood can be used as a countermeasure .

5. Brominated Vegetable Oil

It is mainly used in citrus-based soft drinks to stabilize the flavor. However, it can affect the nervous system, memory, and interfere with iodine absorption. Avoiding drinks containing this ingredient is the most effective approach .

6. Titanium Dioxide

This heavy metal is often used in candy to give it a smooth surface and vibrant color. Unfortunately, it can cause DNA breaks, damage chromosomes, and increase the risk of cancer. Volcanic ash minerals and infrared saunas can help with detoxification, but the best approach is still to avoid ingestion altogether .

Conclusion: Knowing how to choose ensures peace of mind when eating.

While the human body has its own detoxification abilities, especially the liver, some people have weaker detoxification abilities due to genetic factors and need to avoid ingesting these chemicals. Eating more cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower can help promote detoxification .

Hong Kong people value health, and knowing how to read labels and avoid harmful additives is the first step in protecting their own and their families' health. Next time you shop, take a few extra seconds to check the ingredient list and safeguard your health !
