Research Details: Mouse Experiments and Dietary Composition
This widely cited study, titled " Pathway to Diabetes through Attenuation of Pancreatic Beta Cell Glycation and Glucose Transport ," actually used mice, not humans. More importantly, the mice used in the study belonged to a genetically predisposed breed ( C57BL/6J ) that was prone to obesity and diabetes, making them inherently susceptible to insulin resistance .
The so-called "high-fat diet" in the study actually contains a lot of sugar and processed ingredients, including :
· High glycemic index maltodextrin (even higher than white sugar )
· Genetically modified corn starch and sucrose
· Soybean oil (high in Omega-6 , unsaturated fat )
· Hydrogenated coconut oil (trans fat )
With a total sugar content as high as 175 grams, it is more of a mixed diet that is high in sugar, highly processed, and high in risk than a high-fat diet .
The other side of the ketogenic diet: a truly high-fat, low-carb model
Another study indicated that a true high-fat ketogenic diet could have positive effects on mice, including :
· weight loss
· Lower blood sugar
· Improve glucose tolerance
· Boost energy levels
This shows that the quality and composition of a diet are far more important than the "fat content" itself .
In conclusion: Fat is not the enemy; making the right choices is key.
Hong Kong people lead busy lives with diverse dietary choices, but it's crucial to be discerning when faced with health information. Whether a high-fat diet is harmful cannot be determined solely by news headlines. The real key lies in the types of fats, sugar intake, and the overall quality of the diet. Instead of fearing fat, learn to choose healthy fats and avoid processed sugars to build a solid foundation for your health. Health begins with understanding !
