Dr. Eric Berg explained that 15,000 people in the United States are on the waiting list for a liver transplant, but the liver is one of the few organs that can repair itself. Liver cells have a very high tolerance for damage, possess a strong regenerative capacity, and can produce proteins, bile, and vitamins, while also affecting brain health. Severe liver damage can even lead to dementia.

Liver disease typically progresses from fatty liver, followed by inflammation, and then to fibrosis or cirrhosis. A swollen liver can cause pain in the right shoulder or neck, and reduced bile production can further exacerbate liver damage.
Liver damage is not necessarily incurable. Dr. Berg has encountered patients who were on the transplant list but ultimately reversed their liver damage and did not need a transplant. While it cannot be guaranteed that everyone will succeed, many patients are not even told that there are ways to improve their condition. By addressing three main issues: fat, inflammation, and fibrosis, there is a chance of reversal.
The most important thing isn't reducing fat or protein, but reducing carbohydrates . High-carbohydrate diets are a major cause of liver inflammation, fatty liver, and fibrosis. Studies show that reducing daily carbohydrate intake to 20 grams can shrink the liver, reduce fat, and improve liver function.
Dr. Berg recommends a two-pronged approach: a healthy ketogenic diet combined with intermittent fasting. A low-carb diet combined with fasting can significantly reduce inflammation, reverse some fibrosis, and clear liver fat.
Don't worry about fats, carbohydrates are the real issue. It's recommended to increase healthy fats such as Omega-3 , olive oil, and egg yolks (which contain lecithin), and reduce Omega-6 fatty acids such as vegetable oils. Saturated fats are fine, as long as carbohydrate intake is low enough.
Regarding protein intake, a moderate to low level is recommended, and a high-protein diet is not advised.
High carbohydrate intake increases oxidative stress, causes chronic inflammation, converts carbohydrates into fat that accumulates in the liver, and triggers insulin resistance, ultimately leading to fatty liver, inflammation, and fibrosis.
Conclusion: Don't assume that "liver disease = waiting for a liver transplant" anymore. Understanding carbon reduction is the key to true reversal.
The liver can regenerate. As long as you know how to reduce carbohydrates, control fat, and adjust protein intake, even cirrhosis is not necessarily incurable. Starting today, follow the plan and don't do nothing. Your liver will respond to your efforts.
