Heartburn isn't just about "too much acid"! Dr. Berg reveals the real cause and a three-step solution.

胃灼熱不是「酸太多」!柏格醫生揭開真正原因與三步改善法

Myth: Heartburn is not caused by too much acid, but by too little acid.
Many people take antacids as soon as they experience heartburn, thinking it will neutralize excess stomach acid. Dr. Berg points out that this is a major misconception. In fact, most people's problem isn't too much stomach acid, but too little.
Insufficient stomach acid can prevent the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) the valve between the stomach and esophagus from closing properly, causing acidic substances in the stomach to flow back into the esophagus and resulting in a burning sensation. This incorrect compensatory response makes people mistakenly believe that the acid is too strong, thus ignoring the real root cause.

Why is stomach acid the body's "digestive engine"?
Normal stomach acid pH should be between 1 and 3. This acidity allows for:

  • Activate the enzymes that break down food;
  • It promotes the secretion of alkaline fluid by the pancreas and liver to neutralize stomach acid;
  • It helps release bile, thus aiding in fat digestion.
    When there is insufficient stomach acid, this series of mechanisms is disrupted, food cannot be completely broken down in the small intestine, eventually leading to bloating, fermentation, bacterial overgrowth, and gastritis.

Three steps to naturally repair heartburn

Step 1: Replenish stomach acid to restore valve function.
Dr. Berg recommends using apple cider vinegar or betaine HCl before meals to help restore stomach acid levels. When stomach acid increases, the valve automatically closes once it senses the correct acidity, relieving the heartburn sensation. If a burning sensation occurs upon first use, it may indicate existing gastritis or ulcers, which should be addressed before further use.

Step 2: Replenish nutrients that produce stomach acid
The production of stomach acid requires the support of various minerals and vitamins. Doctors recommend:

  • Ingest potassium, zinc, sea salt, and trace minerals from electrolyte powder ;
  • Avoid overly processed and high-sugar diets, as carbohydrates can weaken the nervous system's control over the gastric valve;
  • Supplement with vitamin B1 (thiamine) to restore the autonomic nerve function of the digestive system.

Step 3: Repairing the stomach wall and intestinal mucosa
If you already have stomach inflammation or ulcers, you can use ** Zinc - L-Carnosine ** , a special zinc complex. Dr. Berg explains that it can:

  • Strengthen the mucus barrier of the stomach and intestines to prevent bacterial invasion;
  • Accelerates wound healing in ulcerated and inflamed areas;
  • It can relieve symptoms of gastritis, leaky gut , and gastroesophageal reflux disease ( GERD ).
    This form of zinc is highly absorbable and has a repairing effect on the small intestine, large intestine, and esophagus, making it one of the most recommended supplements in naturopathy.

Restoring acid-base balance is the fundamental solution.
Dr. Berger reminds us: "Heartburn is not the enemy, but your body's way of telling you that you don't have enough stomach acid." True healing comes from restoring the body's balance the right amount of acid, a healthy gut, and adequate nutrition. When the digestive system gets back on track, heartburn, gastritis, and acid reflux problems will naturally disappear.
