In Hong Kong, plant-based meat, vegan burgers, and vegan chicken wings are becoming increasingly popular "healthy alternatives," especially in communities that prioritize environmental protection and health. But did you know that these seemingly healthy choices might be the culprit behind your health problems and increased burden on your liver ? Their core ingredient is called " textured vegetable protein " ( TVP ).

🧪 What is tissueed plant protein?
TVP is an ultra-processed protein, primarily made from soybeans or cottonseed. Its creation stemmed from a "business inspiration": how to deal with the waste left over from producing vegetable oils? The answer was — turn it into "protein" and sell it to you.
TVP is now widely used in:
- Plant-based meat products (such as plant-based chicken wings and plant-based burgers)
- Fake hot dogs, fake cheese
- Cereal breakfast, children's lunch
- Even infant formula
🧨 The production process was astonishing.
The production process of TVP includes:
- Remove oil, fiber and nutrients
- High temperature heating
- Use chemical solvents (such as hexane , a component of gasoline).
- Bleaching, deodorizing, and acidification treatment
👉 The US FDA has not set an upper limit for hexane residue, nor has it conducted long-term safety studies . The "healthy plant-based meat" you eat every day may contain trace amounts of industrial chemicals.
🧬 What happens if you eat it? Your body will need to "replenish" it.
TVP is a "pure protein," but it lacks the vitamins and minerals that natural proteins should have. To digest it, the body "borrows" nutrients from the liver and tissues, leading to:
- Increased burden on the liver
- gallbladder problems
- Loss of vitamins and fat-soluble nutrients
- Kidney cell abnormalities (such as kidney cell enlargement)
🧟♂️Protein poisoning: You may have heard of the "rabbit famine"
People who eat only lean meat (such as rabbit) in the wild will experience fatigue, diarrhea, and even death due to a lack of fat and nutrients. This condition is called "protein poisoning," and TVP is a similar "pure protein trap."
🧂 Multiple versions of processed soybeans
Besides TVP , there are also:
- Soy protein isolate : commonly found in milk powder, cereals, and vegan cheese.
- Hydrolyzed Soy Protein : As a Flavor Enhancer
- These processed soybeans are mostly GMO genetically modified and non-fermented, which is completely different from the traditional Asian way of consuming them.
✅ How can Hong Kong people avoid these "pseudo-healthy proteins"?
- Avoid buying products containing " Textured Vegetable Protein " or " Soy Protein Isolate ".
- Pay attention to the ingredient list and don't be misled by terms like "plant-based" or "vegan".
- Choose natural, fermented soy products, such as tofu, natto, and miso.
- Prioritize natural protein sources such as grass-fed meat, eggs, and fish.
- If you need to supplement with protein powder, choose a complete formula that includes fat and trace elements.
Hong Kong people lead a fast-paced life and frequently eat out, but "health" shouldn't just be a label on packaging. Truly healthy protein should be natural, whole, and non-toxic. Next time you see "vegan chicken wings" or "plant-based burgers" in the supermarket, take a closer look at the ingredient list and be less swayed by marketing hype.
